The Blantyre, a grand estate situated on a hundred-acre estate outside Lenox, Massachusetts, epitomizes the proud and somewhat old-fashioned spirit of its Berkshires setting. An English-style summer house from the turn of the 20th century, the Blantyre has since been converted to a luxury hotel, and its four surrounding cottages and carriage house have been refitted to accommodate guests as well.

Public spaces and guest rooms are decorated in a traditional style, filled with dark wood, soft chairs and sofas covered in floral damask, brick fireplaces, four poster beds, fresh flowers, chandeliers and antique heirlooms. A cheese and fruit tray welcomes visitors upon arrival. But would-be casual weekenders, be forewarned: the pursuit of food and drink outside your room will usually require that you change into something befitting the tasteful Blantyre ambience. To sample the champagne and canapés, or any of the other gourmet French cuisine on offer, a jacket and tie are mandatory.

Whatever your perspective on dressing for dinner, you’ll appreciate the myriad cultural events going on outside the Blantyre. Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, hosts an annual jazz festival, while Jacob’s Pillow puts on a dance festival. Outdoor Shakespeare performances, as you might expect, are also common warm-weather entertainment. If you happen to visit the Berkshires during the winter, though, don’t despair: the Blantyre actually employs a “Snow Concierge” to assist ice skating, snowshoeing or skiing outings. Make sure to inquire about the hot chocolate selection, or better yet, the “ice picnic” and “snow barbecue.”
